This brief asked to design a blad book design a section of the Ralph Hotere Black Light book, including the Contents, Foreword, The Art of
Ralph Hotere and the Chronology. I interpreted the subject as personal, concealed, emotively charged, with a focus on materiality. The quote
"Moving carefully between the artist’s wish for privacy and his audiences desire for knowledge…” particularly stood out, which I have interpreted into the use of white space and smaller titles to evoke this sense of Hotere himself being concealed and reserved. This also allows the art works
to take main focus throughout the book. The black section further evokes the sense of privacy and concealed. The use of the lazer cutting on the dust jacket to create shadow and depth references how Hotere’s art works also transform the 2D plane.
